The beginning

So a couple months ago we both had the terrifying realization that we were graduating soon. Neither of us really felt drawn to any career just yet, but we both knew that we had better come up with some sort of plan and quick. Traveling was something that we both wanted to do, so we began a search for voluntourism programs. We found the Workaway website and quickly emailed various people about working in their homes. Many didn't reply, but luckily two of our top picks did!

The first place that we are going is situated in the province of Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is a renovated 11th century priory that now serves as a B&B names Chambres Saint Michel. The couple who owns the priory are named Philippe and Brigitte (quintessential French names, I know). I have only talked to Brigitte, but she seems really great! We are going out on a limb in terms of accommodation though. It turns out that we are going to be sleeping in a tent for the 3 weeks that we are there! I am a little skeptical, but hey, we are staying there for free. I'm not too worried about it. Brigitte also told me that both her and Phillipe are accomplished French chefs (also very quintessentially French) and they use ingredients right from their vegetable garden! I hope that I am able to learn a lot from her!

In terms of work, I think that we will be helping out with guests. Neither of us speaks very articulate French, but Brigitte said that she would love to help us out with that. I don't know how much we'll learn in 3 weeks, but immersion is the best way to learn quickly! Below are some pictures that they included on the website.

In the beginning of September we will move to a chateau in Normandy. It is in a small town called Montpinchon and is very close to Mont Saint Michel, Bayeaux, and Coutances. The chateau also is run as a B&B and we will be helping with painting and gardening. The provided accommodation is quite the opposite of our "luxury" tent in Aquitaine. There are a number of small cottages (gites) around the main chateau and they have offered to put us up in one of them (ummm OK). It has an ensuite bathroom and full kitchen. Jon, the owner of the chateau, said that in terms of food he will just take us to the local grocer and let us pick out what we want. His only condition is that we don't buy chips, champagne, and chocolate. I think we can handle that. He has also offered to give us bikes and occasionally a car to explore the area. Below are some pictures of the chateau!

In October we are possibly staying with an Austrian family on their goat farm, but nothing is set in stone yet. We will be sure to keep you posted!
